Youth Ministry at St. John’s
The St. John’s Youth Ministry is a community of adults and young people dedicated to creating a supportive environment for our youth to explore the ways God is revealed in their lives. We strive to develop friendships; learn empathy and leadership; live Christian values; and work together in service of those in need.
Middle School Youth Group
Our Middle School Youth Group is for kids in 6th–8th grade. It meets after church on Sundays from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is our hope that this group will give the kids an active, fun, informed understanding of their faith. Through a variety of projects and programs, outings, and outreach, we seek to instill in them all an awareness of God’s abundant love for them and an appreciation for the Episcopal Church.
Confirmation Class
Our Confirmation class is offered to high school youth who desire to undertake the rite of Confirmation. It meets on alternating Sundays from October to May, from 3:45–4:45 p.m. with the expectation that they will attend Sunday Worship at 5 p.m. While 10th grade is the normal year for Confirmation, it is also open to 9th graders upon request, and also to 11th and 12th graders who have not received Confirmation. In the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer, Confirmation is defined as “a mature public affirmation of faith” by those who want to claim the Christian faith and the promises made on their behalf at their baptism for themselves. Here at St. John’s we have an engaging, informative curriculum which instructs our confirmands in the basics of such topics as the Bible, Theology, Christian History, Prayer, Liturgy, and Social Justice. We ask that those who seek to enter into this process make a commitment to the full year of instruction. However, in keeping with the desire for our confirmands to take ownership of their own life of faith, those who complete the course will have the option not to be confirmed, if that is their decision.
High School Youth Group
Our High School Youth Group is offered to all 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. In this group, we seek to help our young adults discover and reflect upon the ways in which God is active, present and available to them in their lives. Through discussions, regular fellowship, volunteer and service opportunities, as well as personal support from clergy and lay adults in the parish, our goal is that when these young people graduate from High School, they enter the next stage of life with a faith that will journey with them, acting as a resource for them to draw upon no matter what lies ahead.
Appalachia Service Project
Each year, our Youth who have completed 9th grade and older take part in a weeklong trip to the hills of Appalachia, volunteering through the Cohasset Appalachia Service Project, building and fixing homes for people who are not able to do so themselves. The trip is a favorite with the youth, and it is full of fun, fellowship, and hard work, all framed in the Christian commandment to love your neighbor, especially those in need. Parishioner David Clinton is a long-time participant and current center leader. Contact Dave here.

GET INVOLVED with Youth Ministry!
We welcome and encourage the participation of adult parishioners in the Youth Ministry, whether they are parents of youth or not. If you feel called to be involved with helping to plan, lead, and oversee the spiritual development of our young people, please email office@stjohns-hingham.org.
